Vampire Lesbian Kickboxers Logo WIP, 2007
9 1/2 x 7 1/2 x 5 1/2 in. (including wood base)
Oil clay; Armature wire; Brass tubing

Her wings - well, I've only made 1, so the other is photoshoped in there.

In the end she's going to be 3 separate pieces, the base, the body and a wing (which will hopefully be universal and will work for both sides). I fear her very small ankles and I'm not sure why she doesn't have feet... And off of a recommendation by END *Arthammer of a different project, I'll probably connect her hands to her thighs with wire or such for sprueing in the mold.

She's been a lot of fun... any recommendations or critiques are very welcome!!

Have you tried to use tooth picks to add strength in the arms and legs?

One method of sprueing I use in that situation, is that if you have a grinder/sanding wheel, put a sharp tip in each end of the wire. Then stick it into the leg, then the hand. The tipping will break off flush where it goes into those points [after you've poured the copy], and you can blow the sprue out with canned air.
Usually I make a 2 piece mold though and just lay the sprue on the separation wall [still do the tipping bit], so that when I open the mold, you can just pop it out, but it is a usefull method if you can't keep it in the separation wall.
Wish I could describe it better, but you probably know all of this already.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I did to connect the arms and legs. Currently I changed the direction that I molded her in... last minute decisions aren't always the best!!! So, I need to go back and add in something from the elbows to the fill point... *sigh...

Yeah.. I did 2 part molds when I did plaster. I fully cut open the silicone molds I did for the army men and regretted it. It gave a lot more chance for the molds to warp and distort with pressure when getting put back together... I didn't have any trouble, with keying, at getting them lined up though. But this time I just cut what I needed to get her out and left it as one piece.

Thanks for the input - I really enjoy hearing from other experienced artists. :D

A trick that often works is to draw the separation line on the sculpt with a sharpie marker, then pour the silicone. Then as you cut the mold open the line has often transfered to the silicone [depending on the silicone], so that you can bend the silicone back from the figurine and see a bit of the line to keep cutting on. Some silicones don't pick up the line though, so mix a little bit and pour it over a sharpie line as a test.

I need to see this movie!!!

This is coming very nicely. Beautiful curvy shaped body. I like how her left arm is lightly resting on her hip like that.

Are you worried about her ankles snapping or something?

:D Thanks.

I'm worried that the figure won't hold up well in the long run being that it's balancing on such a small point... but the resin is pretty rigid and lighter - currently if I don't watch it the knees start to bend in funky directions and the ankle clay keeps splitting a little where the brass tubing joins the armature wire.

I've also never done multiple piece casts. She has tubing from the bottom of the ankles into the base and where the wings attach... so she'll be in four pieces that will need to be assembled. Since the only casting in resin I've done is the little army of men, I'm just cautious.
